ILA Berlin 2026: XARION presents automated ultrasonic testing for aerospace, defense and MRO

Laser Excited Acoustics enables dry, contact-free ultrasonic inspection without water or gel – including complex components, small-series production and MRO applications.

Vienna. Aircraft components may look flawless from the outside while hidden defects such as delaminations, disbonds or porosity remain inside. XARION Laser Acoustics is addressing this challenge with Laser Excited Acoustics, a technology designed to make automated ultrasonic inspection practical for aerospace, defense and MRO.

At the heart of XARION's inspection solutions is LEA, a dry and contact-free ultrasonic testing method. It combines pulsed laser-based ultrasound generation with XARION's Optical Microphone for detection.

Unlike conventional ultrasonic testing, the method requires neither physical contact with the component nor water or gel as a coupling medium. This removes two major obstacles to automation and simplifies integration into industrial inspection systems.

The technology is already used in aerospace production, including the inspection of large CFRP structures such as helicopter tail booms. It is also suitable for composite materials, metallic components, bonded assemblies and sandwich structures.

With LEAbot, XARION also targets applications where conventional automated inspection systems are difficult to justify: small batches, changing component types, mobile inspection scenarios and MRO environments in which the system must come to the part.

Another key focus is pulse-echo inspection. The method works from a single side of the component and provides depth information about detected defects – a decisive factor for repair decisions in aerospace and defense applications.

XARION Laser Acoustics will present its LEA inspection products at ILA Berlin from June 10 to 14, 2026, in Hall A, Booth 261.

The full press release provides further information on Laser Excited Acoustics, automated ultrasonic inspection, aerospace and defense applications, MRO use cases and XARION's LEA inspection solutions.
